This lecture is all about dressing appropriately and professionally so as to give the correct first impressions to other people. In addition, the lecture also covers on what female and male such wear and groom themselves. I have learnt a lot from this lecture as there are many things I am not aware of in order to dress well so as to give the correct impression to others. From the lecture, I am able to dress more professionally and avoid things that are taught during the lecture for BESE tutorial and interview. I feel that this lecture is useful as it not only teaches us what the ladies should wear but also the opposite gender. This way I can not only make myself look better but also help my father or boyfriend dress better for work or for presentations.

However I feel that the criteria of dressing for ladies can be quite troublesome as alterations are needed to be done on the blazers and skirt if it is bought from retail stores. At first I did though of altering my blazer sleeves as it did not meet the criteria of my tutor and the lecture note but I learn how to turn things around and not wear long sleeved shirts so that altering of the sleeves is not necessary.

One thing I enjoyed in this topic was the task given to identify and give examples of the various dress codes for ladies and gentlemen. Initially, it was difficult to identify the many different dress codes as they were all similar thus after the tutor’s explanations I then understand that the dress codes are different. Even though it is not relevant to me right now as I am not working but I am sure that this knowledge would be useful in the future.
For this topic, the school has arranged us to attend the Shishedo workshop. During the 3 hours long workshop, we were taught how to keep our face clean, how to put on makeup and also learn about the various skin types we might have. I am able to relate what I have learnt to my daily life. I am particular about my skin thus I put in a lot of effort to protect and care for it. Through this workshop, I am please to know that the daily skin care routines I have been carrying out these years are actually correct. As mentioned earlier, going through the various skin types with the class enable me to know that I am actually have combination skin. With this knowledge, I am able to change the facial products I am using to a more suitable one.

However during the part where we were taught how to put on makeup by the instructors, I feel that the some steps they taught were actually redundant. For example, the application of powder and foundation. This can be reduced to one step by just using a 2-way cake foundation. Not only is it faster and more convenient, the result of the 2-way cake foundation on the face would seem lesser heavy too.
Another point I disagree with the instructors was “People with hidden eyelids , do not even bother applying eyeliner because it will not show”. I strongly disagree with this statement as what they have said is not true! I am one of the unfortunate girls with hidden eyelids but I still apply eyeliner and it does show and make a difference as it will make the lash line thicken and fuller.

Overall, the Shishedo workshop was useful and it also allows me to learn more about applying makeup and caring for the skin. And it would be better if everyone can be involved during the hands on practical so that everyone can get a feel of applying of makeup in the correct way.

The lecture for this topic was interesting too. The part that caught my attention the most would be the facts on Skin Care. This particular part of the topic changed my views on several things and also gave me additional knowledge on skin care.
In the lecture, students learn what to do and what not to do when dining. Majority of the things mentioned in the lecture are common sense however there were some points that left me feeling stun as I always thought that it was correct or acceptable to do so. One example would be the style of eating and drinking of soup using the proper way (tipping the bowl away).

However, the Asian dining etiquette is more interesting than the western dining etiquette. This is because in Asia, there are many races and traditions to be aware of. Also there are more dining tools used in Asian dining procedures (chopsticks and fingers). I learn the correct way to eat with fingers when having a traditional Indian or Malay meal. This is useful as Singapore is a multi racial country and in addition, I have Indian and Malay friends. With this knowledge learnt from class and lecture, I will be able to eat correctly using my hands when having a meal at their houses. This is beneficial as it shows that I respect their tradition and culture.

A video was also shown during BESE tutorial. The video is about western dinning etiquette on what should be done or avoided during a meal in a restaurant. The video also taught me how to use the correct cutlery to eat unique food such as lobster, asparagus, spaghetti, anchovies and a whole fish. I feel that this video is useful to a certain extend however I still feel that the video is a little too old as it was most probably filmed in the early 90s thus what is shown may not be relevant now.
